The Habit Loop

Most habits are automatic because they solve something in the moment.

A habit can look irrational from the outside and still make sense to the part of your mind that wants relief, stimulation, comfort, or escape right now.

The Trigger is Usually Specific

Time of day, place, emotion, boredom, pressure, or transition can quietly cue the old response.

The Reward Keeps It Alive

Even unwanted habits usually provide some short-term payoff, which is why simple willpower can feel so expensive.

Restarting Can Become Part of the Pattern

When the only plan is to try harder tomorrow, the habit gets another chance to rehearse itself.

Generic Advice Misses the Moment

The useful question is not just what to stop, but what to do instead when the trigger actually appears.

How Hypnosis Helps

Build the replacement response before the trigger arrives.

Hypnosis helps you rehearse the moment of choice so the new behavior feels more familiar when real life asks for it.

Map the Automatic Sequence

Identify the cue, feeling, thought, reward, and usual follow-through around the habit.

Install a Better Response

Practice the replacement action in a way that fits your actual day and nervous system.

Make Follow-Through Repeatable

Connect the new response to specific cues so it is easier to access without constant self-policing.

How it works

A clear process, without pressure.

You do not need to have the whole plan figured out before you call. The first step is getting specific about the pattern.

“I never thought I would say no to gummy worms.”

“With the end of the year coming, did you complete your New Year’s resolutions? Well, if not a local hypnotist claims that it’s not too late, he can actually hypnotize you into meeting your goals in just a few minutes. So CBS News 8’s Alicia Summers is live to show us if it actually works. Hey Alicia. Hey, yeah, we’re talking about, you know, losing weight, quitting smoking, whatever it may be, getting over your fear of heights. Joe Homs here is a hypnotherapist and he claims that you can rid all those problems in just a matter of minutes. So we’ve been putting him to the test with other things and we, for me personally, I want to rid gummies. So you know, alcoholics, right? I would say I’m a sugar-aholic. I eat sugar every day and I’ve always been wanting to get it out of my life once and for all. So Joe, how do we do this? And folks at home can actually pay close attention and you’ll never want gummies again, right? Is that the claim? That’s the claim. So this is going to be more specific to you. And if folks at home want to do this, they can certainly follow along. If it doesn’t quite work for them, they can learn a little bit more at our website. We’ll teach them the technique. They can do this for anything. So, you know, if you ever been to a restaurant where you had like a bad meal or something and you had just a terrible association with it, you’re just like, oh man, I would never eat that plate or never go to that restaurant again, right? We’re going to use a technique that’s very similar to get you to not like something that you know you like right now, but you know you shouldn’t have it, right? So for you, it’s going to be sugar. It’s going to be these gummies and we’re going to put that to the test right now, okay? So here’s the technique in a nutshell is we’re going to take some associations you have. So everyone has kind of a picture in their mind of like what sugar is for you. And for you, it’s like these, you know, these gummy worms, right? And we’re also going to have pictures of things we don’t like in our minds. So what I want you to do is imagine kind of that picture of like the gummies in your mind. And if it was like located in space, where would it be? Right over here. Just right over here, right? So it’s like kind of right in your face, right? Now, I’m sure there’s also something that, you know, maybe it’s a food that you don’t like you would never eat. And like look at her face, right? She’s like, oh man, there’s something, what is it? Sea urchin. Sea urchin. Never. Right? So sea urchin you never eat, right? It’s just something you don’t like nothing against sea urchin, but you know, it’s just like for you, you’re like, oh gosh, right? So if there was a picture in your mind of that, where would that be? In the distance. In the distance, kind of like right out here. Yeah. Great. Okay. So what I want you to do is take that picture of that sugar, that candy, that stuff that you, you like and you know you don’t want to have, right? And I want you to take that and I want you to move it down, that’s right, all the way to the picture of the sea urchin. Like the sea urchin is becoming part of that sugar, that gummy bears. And I don’t know if you know this, but some, literally some manufacturers use shellfish in the manufacture of the gelatin. So it’s just like sea urchin flavored gummy bears and stuff like that, right? And that look on your face, that’s the look that we’re looking for. Yeah. We’re looking for you to go ew, that’s gross, right? So I want you to, again, take that picture and move it, make it the same and then lock that association into place in your mind. Okay. And you’ve got that. I can actually little see the kind of the corners of your mouth. You’re just like, ooh, ooh, I would never have that, right? So let’s put that to the test, shall we? I have some, you know, lovely gummy worms here. Would you like one, right? No, no, no, no. Look at her face. Like, no, really like, you sure? It’s got some lovely sea urchin flavor in there. No, no, no. Really, right? You don’t want it. And this is the power of your unconscious mind. Now we’ve done this really quickly. Okay. And this is something that would be part of like a larger session or a weight loss kind of thing for lots of people and we can do all kinds of amazing things. But this is something someone at home can do very easily. I never thought I would say no to gummy worms. All right. So give the website. I hope this lasts for long term, but for folks who do want to try this themselves, give your website. Sure. If you want to learn more, you can go to OCHypno.com. Never thought that would happen. All right, Dan and Jean will send it back to you. Are you? Do you want some? It was it works because you’re calling me Dan now as something, right? She was like, I don’t call this morning. Well, Alicia, just to let you know. I’m a little taken back. No. Well, you know, actually, we have gummy worms all over the newsroom for Alicia when you get back. All right. Oh, great. I’m not going back. Take the rest of the day off. Okay. Thanks, Alicia. Bye. Bye.”

“I have not had any urges to bite my nails.”

“I went in skeptical but didn't really know what else to do about my nail biting. I've been a nail biter for over 20 years and have tried multiple things to stop, which includes my parents doing what they could when I was young. At most, as far as I can remember, I've only been able to stop for 2 weeks and really struggled to get to that point. I went in to see Luke 4 weeks ago today, and I have not had any urges to bite my nails. Last week I clipped them for the first time. And as a bonus, my confidence level has gone up as well. Luke was great. It was like a miniature therapy session but with a quick solution to my problem. I totally recommend doing this if you have a subconscious problem you want to deal with.”

Common questions

What people ask before booking.

The consultation is there to determine your ability to benefit from hypnosis and answer practical questions before you schedule your hypnotherapy session.

What kinds of habits can hypnosis help with?

Hypnosis can support many automatic behavior patterns, especially when the trigger and replacement response can be made specific.

What if I have tried to stop before?

That is common. The session looks at what the habit has been doing for you and how to make the replacement response more available.

Is this about discipline?

Not mainly. Discipline helps, but hypnosis focuses on the automatic moment where the old pattern usually takes over.

Can this work online?

Yes. Habit-change consultations and many sessions can be handled by phone or Zoom.
